  1. Select the ball either by clicking on it in the main window, or (preferably) by selecting it in the popup menu at the bottom of the window (the one which reads "ball_1" in the example below). I prefer the popup when working with Poser in general because this avoids any unintentional movement of the object that can result from clicking with the mouse.
  2. Open the Group Edit window by clicking on the group tool icon (see inset above left).

Q. Where did the colors go?
A. When using the group tool, all objects will be shaded in black and/or red regardless of any textures that are applied. Black is used for ungrouped polygons, red for grouped.
Tip: When using the group tool, it will often be convenient to switch between "Smooth Shaded" and "Smooth Lined" display modes, as sometimes it is hard to tell which polygons are grouped and which are not if just one display mode is used.

If your display is set to "Smooth Shaded" mode, you should end up with something that looks like the image below. Notice that since this object as yet has no groups, most of the buttons in the Group Edit window are grayed out and the ball is entirely black.

An excellent character-driven sci-fi story. I did the book cover illustration, "At the Window".
