I take digital still images while I am out shooting video, and these images often end up being used somewhere on the DVD. Menu screens are a good example.

In this case, the darkened gradient on the left provides a plain background so that the menu choices are readable. This is the top-level menu on TSG Multimedia's Steamfest 2007 video. The other menus look similar, just with different background images.
